A native of Tucson, Dr. Mary Strickland developed her passion for animals as a little girl, bringing home all the strays she could find.

Dr. Strickland graduated from Tucson High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Animal Health Science from the University of Arizona.

In 1985, she graduated from Colorado State University with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine.

After practicing with a small animal clinic in Tucson for 6 years, Dr. Strickland opened Strickland Veterinary Clinic in September 1991.

During this time, in addition to her love of dogs and cats, she developed a love for ferrets. Dr. Strickland is one of the few veterinarians in Tucson that treats ferrets.

In her spare time, Dr. Strickland enjoys spending time with her family, which includes the four-legged furry members. She also enjoys the wonderful desert scenery and climate, and the beautiful sunsets.

Dr. Strickland is thankful for the wonderful clients, who have allowed her practice to grow, and for her dedicated staff.

She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Southern Arizona Veterinary Medicine Association.

Susan H. Bertram, DVM

Dr Susan Bertram (aka ‘Dr. B’ ) grew up in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in California, where she and her two sisters hiked with their family dogs, rode horses, and even caught lizards and snakes to keep as pets (much to Mom’s dismay!)

As a teenager, Susan got her first job as a veterinary assistant, and within a few days, knew she had found her future career. Dr Bertram earned her bachelor’s degree in Zoology at Humboldt State University in northern California in 1985, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1990 from Oregon State University. She practiced in Portland, Oregon, and St. Paul, Minnesota, before eventually settling in Bend, Oregon in 1995.

She and her husband, Dan, lived on a five-acre ranch, where they raised her two kids in the company of horses, goats, cattle, chickens, cats and dogs. Dr Bertram owned her own veterinary clinic for 8 years, before selling it, and moving to Tucson in 2015 to escape the long, cold, snowy winters of Oregon.

Dr Bertram has special interests in surgery, dentistry, and nutrition. She is passionate about providing pain relief especially for senior pets. In 2008, Dr Bertram completed an intensive, 175 hour course in veterinary acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, and is happy to offer acupuncture as a complementary modality she can use to relieve pain in her patients.

In her spare time, Dr B enjoys exploring the beautiful desert, mountains and grasslands of Southern Arizona, playing with her two Border collie mix dogs, named Story and Kite, and riding her horse, Kahlu’a.

Dr. B feels fortunate to have joined the caring and compassionate team here at Strickland Veterinary Clinic, where she looks forward to applying her many years of experience to helping keep your pets healthy and happy!
